Christmas in the Algarve means town markets, a few public holidays when many businesses close, and some of the biggest New Year's parties in Portugal. We wrote this page to help you plan the week, and to tell you what we could not confirm yet.

What is the weather like at Christmas on the Algarve coast?

December is the wettest winter month in Faro, according to the IPMA, Portugal's weather institute: about 3.5 inches of rain, falling on roughly seven days. Daytime highs average around 63°F and nights around 50°F (1991-2020 normals). The station records no frost days on average.

These figures are for Faro. Other places on the coast will differ a little. We describe the rest of the season in the Algarve in winter.

What is open on December 24, 25 and 26, and on January 1?

December 25 and January 1 are public holidays under Article 234 of the Portuguese Labor Code. December 24 and 26 are not. Many businesses close or cut their hours on public holidays, so expect closed doors on the 25th and on January 1.

We cannot tell you which shops or restaurants are open, and we do not guess. Check the hours before you go.

Hotels differ too. The hotel association AHETA said in December 2025 that many hotels are closed in winter, and that luxury resorts were about 92% booked for Christmas and New Year by mid-December. If you plan to stay at a resort, book early.

What is there to do at Christmas?

Town councils run the season. The 2026 dates are not published yet, so we describe last year's editions as a guide to the pattern. Check each municipality before you go.

  • Lagos. "Natal em Lagos" ran from November 30, 2025 to January 6, 2026, with a Christmas village, a house for Santa and a small market.
  • Faro. The downtown Christmas market ran from November 29 to December 23, 2025, daily except Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Albufeira. The Christmas market at Praça dos Pescadores ran from December 6, 2025 to January 6, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Nativity scenes. In Lagos, a handmade nativity scene stood at the cultural center until January 10, 2026.

What is New Year's Eve like in the Algarve?

The biggest party is in Albufeira. The town describes its "Albufeira Carpe Nox" as the biggest New Year's party in the country. It takes place on Praia dos Pescadores, on the beach.

According to press coverage of the town hall's August 20, 2026 announcement, the show starts at 10 p.m. on December 31 with a concert by Calema. It includes a drone show of more than a thousand drones telling a story, and it continues after midnight with the DJ Nox. On January 1, Carolina Deslandes plays at the first sunset of 2027. Earlier editions had free entry. We have not confirmed that for this one.

Other towns hold their own parties. In the last edition we found, Loulé organized its celebration over four days at the Passeio das Dunas, in Quarteira. Lagos, Portimão, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Monte Gordo, Silves and Armação de Pêra also hold New Year's events, according to local press for earlier years. Their 2026 programs are not published yet.

Is Christmas on the Algarve coast worth it?

If you want a white Christmas, you are in the wrong country. If you want a Christmas where the New Year's fireworks go off over the sea, you are in the right one.

How long can I stay as an American?

Americans can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. We explain how the count works in how long Americans can stay in Portugal without a visa.

Can I stay in a house over the holidays?

We do not offer a year-round rental. Our winter option in the Algarve is a stay rented by the night, with a lower nightly rate for longer stays, except from December 21 to January 1, when the same rate applies every night.

You send a request, the owner answers, and nothing is booked or paid on the site. The details are on the page for our Algarve house, Casa Azul.

  • The programs. The 2026 Christmas markets and most New Year's events are not announced yet. We update this page when they are.
  • The weather. A December can run far from the averages.
  • ETIAS. As of October 7, 2026, it is not in service, and the official eu-LISA page (last updated May 21, 2026) gives no start date. It would add a step before departure, not days to your stay.
